Luis Gazitua, CEO of JAG insurance

The Upreneur podcast has partnered up with SCORE, hosted by Jeremy Straub, to help bring engaging conversations with today’s top leaders and business owners. In today’s episode, we spoke with Luis Gazitua, CEO of JAG insurance, about how to be successful with your friends, the difference between building and chasing a business, and how your goal as a leader long term is to find someone to replace you!

Luis Gazitua developed an incredible work ethic thanks to his family building one of South Florida’s most recognizable restaurant chains. That work ethic coupled with his ability to simplify even the most complex insurance jargon are what makes him invaluable to his clients. Since forming JAG alongside Douglas Jones and Fernando Alvarez in 2013, he has been determined to redefine the insurance experience. That innovation continues today as he leverages social media to create new business relationships and is now leading the charge in the integration of cryptocurrency within insurance.

Learning a stellar work ethic from my family as they build an iconic restaurant chain throughout South Florida, I understand what it takes to build something from the ground up. That type of empathy is what drives my desire to help business owners expand their businesses by guiding them through their risk management needs. At JAG, I’ve been able to create a company that gives personable service while having the resources of a larger firm. We are well equipped to help any business protect its hard-earned assets.

My other passion is showcasing the potential of the insurance industry to younger generations. I think the industry has done a poor job of showing the possibilities of careers insurance can offer. It’s my goal to rectify this and get new blood into the industry and JAG be a hub of new talent. Mentorship is the best gift you can give to an industry or a community. That’s what JAG wants to offer to all newcomers in our industry.

In today’s episode, we spoke with Jeffrey Zucker, Co-Founder of Green Lion Partners, about how the cannabis industry is growing and is in need of lawyers, accounts, and more.  We talked about how Jeffrey jumps headfirst into his entrepreneurial endeavors and figures it out.

Green Lion Partners is a Denver-based business strategy firm focused on early-stage development amongst firms in the cannabis industry. Green Lion has also developed Natural Order Supply, an agricultural supply company. Mike Bologna and Jeffrey Zucker, Co-Founders of Green Lion Partners, also co-own Dip Devices, which brings high-end, innovative products to the ever-expanding vaporizer market.

Green Lion Partners is a business strategy firm focused on providing consulting services, direct investments, and strategic partnerships to early-stage companies in the regulated cannabis industry. Jeffrey is always open to hearing new business ideas of any kind and is happy to get involved with projects, people, and ideas in which he believes. His business decisions are determined not only based upon making a profit but also—inspired by his late father’s mission of Tikkun Olam (repair of the world)—with the goal of improving the lives of others as much as possible.

Fahed Essa, Co-Founder of Mayv

The Upreneur podcast has partnered up with SCORE, hosted by Jeremy Straub, to help bring engaging conversations with today’s top leaders and business owners. In today’s episode, we spoke with Fahed about his experience before Mayv, how you need to find a partner with a complementary skillset, and when you are starting out, you need to figure out who is going to pay for your product before you build your business.

Fahed Al-Essa is the co-founder of Mayv, a resilience-based holistic pain management solution designed for patients looking for a new approach to living and thriving in the face of chronic conditions. Launched in April 2021, it’s a program that combines evidence-based stress and pain management approaches with plant-based anti-inflammatory supplements that tackle major aggravators of chronic pain, stress, and inflammation. In this capacity, Al-Essa’s core responsibilities are maintaining company trajectory and vision, developing the internal and external values present and leading by example. He also oversees all financial and operational sustainability, sales & marketing initiatives, and customer outreach.

Prior to founding Mayv, Al-Essa held esteemed positions at major healthcare companies and launched numerous wellness-related start-ups. His extensive background in science and healthcare coupled with his firsthand experience living with chronic pain and working with patients and professionals who know the challenges of these debilitating conditions, helped him to bridge the gap between conventional and complementary medicine to build a solution that patients actually need.

In addition to personally suffering from chronic pain over the last two decades from a broken femur and three unsuccessful surgeries, Al-Essa’s mother (and mentor), was diagnosed with five consecutive and different cancers over the span of five years. He felt the medical treatment was superb, but the mental health care she received was not. Her emotional wellbeing was deteriorating, and it was disheartening for him to see how little her medical team focused on an integrative approach, where mental and emotional care are on equal footing with cellular and biological health. He knew something had to change, and that’s how Mayv was born.

“At Mayv we plan to be the patient’s companion in their medical journey, filling the gaps where the system falls short,” says Al-Essa. “We believe in a holistic perspective, and only when we address the patient’s mind, body, and spirit are we creating a space to heal. We plan to tackle chronic pain, piece by piece – first with joint pain, and then into other critical health verticals.”

Sarah Apgar, Founder of FitFighter

The Upreneur podcast has partnered up with SCORE, hosted by Jeremy Straub, to help bring engaging conversations with today’s top leaders and business owners. In today’s episode, we spoke with Sarah Apgar, Founder of FitFighter.  We spoke about how important it is to show, teach, and explain how your product works. You can’t assume your customer knows how to use your product, teach them. They will appreciate it more.  We also talked about how building a team of people who can complement your ideas will push you to go further.  Sarah shared that building an advisory board has been vital to her success.

Sarah Apgar is the Founder of FitFighter, a complete strength training system that makes you ready for your everyday mission. She is an Iraq War Veteran, All-American Athlete, Fitness Professional, Volunteer Firefighter, and mom of 2 little girls. Sarah and FitFighter have been featured on ABC News, USA Sports Radio, Armed Forces Network, and Oxygen Magazine, and performed for clients the likes of ESPN, FDNY, and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Sarah promotes and celebrates the power of teams, women leaders, and public service, contributing a portion of sales to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Foundation. Sarah has an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a BA from Princeton University, and is a graduate of the Princeton Army ROTC Program. She lives in Port Washington NY with her husband, Ben Smith, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and her two young daughters, Emory and Arlyn.

FitFighter is a strength and conditioning system originally designed for the fire service, made with a real fire hose. Sarah is an Army veteran who after leaving the army joined her local volunteer fire department in Huntington, NY to recapture the sense of camaraderie she had experienced in the military, which helped inspire FitFighter’s creation.

There is also a GREAT giveback side to this. A portion of sales sponsor the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation supporting Veterans, First Responders, frontline healthcare workers, and their families.    Additionally, Sarah is providing at-cost equipment to FDNY firefighters who need to train at home AND she is also working to keep high school and college athletes in tip top shape until sports can resume safely.
